"KAJIMAYA-"

Once A upon a time long ago, there was a tree on Okinawa that reached high in to the sky close to Hamahiga Iland. One day, the Sky God was walking around up in the sky and came across a tree sticking through the clouds. The Sky God decided he would clime down this tree to find out what it was like down on earth. When the Sky God got all the way down the tree he jumped of one of the small limbs close to the ground and landed in some real soft clay. The Sky God then looked around and noticed there was a lot of soft clay in this area then he said to his self; g This is real nice clay here, good for making thingsh.

"The Sky God started thinking"gOh, this is excellent clay,I can make the humans I have always thought about out of this clay."

Without hesitation, the Sky God begin to mold six human figures, three men and three women, out of the clay and before he knew it, he had splent the whole day making his humans. It was almost dark when he finished that day. Thinking to his self he said, gNow it is too dark for me to give live to my humans today so; I will come back tomorrow when the sun rises and the tide comes in to give life to my humans.h

The next morning the Sky God came back down to earth and found his six clay figures broken in to very many pieces. At that time he said; gOH no! Who has done such a horrible thing?h Now I will have to make them all over again.hWith out further hesitation the Sky God began to make the six figures again and once again when he finished it was late in the evening when he finished making the six figures. The Sky God decided that he would go back home in the sky and rest then come back in the morning to give life to his humans so; he climed back up in the sky and went home.

The next morning the Sky God came back down to earth by the tree and once again found all the work he had done in just as many pieces as the day before. This time the Sky God got real angry so angry that thunder and lighting came from the sky and clouds. Then the Sky God decided to stay on earth that night and watch all night long if he had to hoping to find out just who would do such a bad thing to his work. This time when the Sky God finished his work he climbed up the tree far enough so he could see his work then sat down on a limb and waited.

Around midnight the ground started to shake then a bright ball of fire bursted out from the center of the earth as the ground split in half. The Earth God appeared and saw the clay humans then grabbed a hold of the clay figures and started to break them in to small pieces just as he did before.

At that time, the Sky God jumped up and went down the tree shouting out, gNo, no! Stop!h gWhat are you doing to my work?h

The Earth God looked around at the Sky God and said, gSo, it is you that made these clay figures without my permission.h Only because he was being questioned about permission and knowing that he was the Sky God for the sky and not the earth the Sky God was hesitant to argue at that point. The Sky God then said;

gAll right, I admit it was my fault for not asking you for permission first.h g It was also my idea to make these clay figures, then give them life as human beings. Ifm truly sorry that I didnft ask for your permission to use your wonderful clay so I could do my work and then let my humans live for 100 yearsh. The Sky God humbly begged for forgiveness and finally the Earth God gave the Sky God permission to create the six new human figures.

The Sky God then remade the six figures and the next morning he gave them life. The six figures were paired of to become three couples and this was the beginning of human life on Okinawa.

The humans lived their lives happily and the Sky God was very pleased to see the number of humans grow though the years. Ninety-seven years passed and there was all kinds of humans, men and women young and old.

Then one day the Earth God paid a visit to the Sky God and stated, g It is now time for you to return my clay to me.h The Sky God looked at the Earth God and replied back, gbut 100 years have not yet passed.h The Earth God replied, gAh, but there was three leap years the brought the calendar ahead to 100 years today, I have a duty to report to the almighty God above us about this contract and you must return the clay to me now.h The Sky God replied, g all right, I understand you duty; however, you can see that these humans are children, adults, elderly, and also some newborns. You surely canft say all have been living for 100 years now can you? Itfs not my reasonable to claim the 100-year terms for all of them, now is it?h

After many hours of argumentation between the two Gods they finally agreed to give those who lived to 97 years of age some more time. The solution was simple; to let the humans live longer than 97 years, they should celebrate there 97th birthday year as if they were newborn babies; then there would be no problem with the contract. Both the Sky God and the Earth God felt this would be a good way to let the almighty God accept the gnewh human life.

This is when gKajimayah began; those at the age of 97 confirms the agreement between the Sky God and the Earth God; And also to the almighty God for their new life on earth.

To this day in Okinawa, when a person reaches the age of 60 it is called gKanrekih the beginning of happy old age. At the age of g88h itfs called gToukachih to celebrate the maturity of old age. Then, at the age of g97h "Kajimaya" every one celebrates it as if they were newly born by carrying a handmade paper windmill in a parade thought the village.
